In the mid nineties, a short film launched a national moment. Simply titled Trevor, it told the story of a young boy coming of age in the South in the early 80s. Navigating a love of the theater, ballet, and Diana Ross, Trevor also struggles to come to terms with his sexual identity. As others begin to discover the ways he is different, he loses the support of friends, parents, church and community, and begins to contemplate the worth of his life. At the end of the film, Trevor finds that though life can be difficult, there are people out there who will support and love him as his whole self.

After winning an Academy Award, the creators came to the realization that there existed no real place for young people like Trevor to turn when facing similar challenges. Working together to secure funding and build the necessary infrastructure, The Trevor Project was successfully founded in 1998. Today, it operates as the leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) young people under 25. Providing 24/7 support, The Trevor Project serves 95,000 people through their crisis counseling, and thousands more through community resources, education initiatives, and advocacy of law and policies that will reduce suicide among LGBTQ youth.

Though every Pride Month offers an incredible opportunity to celebrate identity fiercely, passionately, and openly, it’s equally important to remember the work that happens year-round. The Trevor Project’s day after day dedication to saving young LGBTQ lives makes the celebration that much sweeter.
